From Fresh Fruit Bunches to Crude Palm Oil: The Palm Oil Pressing Process
Crude palm oil production begins with the harvesting of oil palm fruit bunches. Because lipases within the palm fruit can rapidly cause oil rancidity, the harvested bunches must be transported to the palm oil processing mill within 24 hours. Step 1: Raw Material Reception and Sterilization
Palm fruit bunches are unloaded, cleaned, and temporarily stored using a fully hydraulic unloading platform. Subsequently, the bunches are fed into a palm oil sterilizer tank for treatment with high-temperature steam. This critical step effectively deactivates enzymes, prevents oil rancidity, and ensures the high quality of the crude oil. Step 2: Threshing
After sterilization, the fruit bunches are conveyed via a bucket elevator to palm oil threshing machine, where strong vibrations ensure the complete separation of palm fruits from the empty fruit bunches. The separated empty fruit stalks can be utilized as biomass fuel, enabling resource recycling.
Step 3: Oil Pressing
The separated palm fruits enter the pressing station. After undergoing high-temperature cooking to break down the cellular structure of the pulp, the fruit is squeezed by palm oil screw press to extract the oil-rich crude oil. Step 4: Crude Oil Clarification
The pressed liquid enters the palm oil clarification section for sedimentation and separation. Hot water is first used to reduce the crude oil’s viscosity, followed by a vibrating screen to remove some solid impurities; the oil mixture is then heated to 85–90°C and separated in a clarification tank. After filtration, the oil is fed into a disc-type centrifuge to yield crude palm oil. The purified crude oil is then conveyed to storage tanks for temporary holding.
Step 5: Palm Kernel Recovery
The press cake (a mixture of fiber and palm kernels) is conveyed to a fiber separation system to separate the fiber from the kernels. The separated palm kernels are sent to a dedicated silo for subsequent palm kernel oil extraction. After the kernels undergo shell-breaking and kernel-shell separation, they pass through a palm kernel oil press, filter, and disc centrifuge to produce crude palm kernel oil (CPKO). Degumming/Deacidification: A washing method is employed to separate soap stock from the oil mixture. Deacidification is the process of removing free fatty acids and other acidic components. Physical refining methods may also be employed, involving the addition of hot water, boric acid, or similar agents to crude palm oil for degumming.
Bleaching (Decolorization): Adsorbents (such as activated bleaching earth) are used to remove pigments, residual soap, and metal ions, thereby improving the oil’s color.
Deodorization: The deacidified palm oil undergoes vacuum distillation at high temperatures to eliminate off-flavors and odors.
Fractionation (Optional): Leveraging the unique multi-melting-point characteristics of palm oil, precise temperature-controlled crystallization and membrane filtration are used to separate the refined oil into products with different melting points (e.g., soft oil, and stearin), significantly enhancing economic value.
