The Necessity of Palm Oil Mill Wastewater Treatment
At present, the area covered by oil palm trees is increasing, and the production of palm oil is also increasing accordingly. Therefore, waste and other by-products in the palm oil production process are also increasing. The palm oil pressing process includes 6 basic stages, fruit bunch reception, sterilization, threshing, crushing and pressing, oil clarification, palm kernel recovery, etc.
Palm oil wastewater mainly comes from the process of palm oil pressing and cleaning equipment; these wastewaters contain cellulosic materials, fats, oils and lubricating grease. Palm oil mill wastewater also contains a large amount of solids, with suspended solids and total dissolved solids ranging from 18,000 mg per liter and 40,000 mg per liter respectively. These solids are usually called palm oil mill sludge. The solid wastes generated during the palm oil pressing process include leaves, branches, scrubber cakes, empty fruit bunches, fruit shells and fibers.
Among the wastes generated, wastewater (POME) is considered to be the main waste that pollutes the environment. Palm oil wastewater is brown-yellow and contains high solids, grease, COD and BOD, etc.
There are several methods for wastewater treatment. Direct discharge of wastewater will have a great negative impact on the environment. Since wastewater contains high solid matter, it can be converted into valuable products such as raw materials and organic fertilizers. Although wastewater is organic, it is difficult to decompose under natural conditions. Effective treatment of wastewater can continuously utilize waste and turn waste into treasure. Therefore, palm oil mill wastewater treatment is necessary.
